Statement

The process of creating and recalling memories can lead to a transformation of information and a potential for dualities. The act of reflecting upon our intimate experiences can often become an investigation—a system of discovering multiple layers where there appeared to be only one. My sculptures are physical representations of our psychological incongruities: the doubts, questions and shifts in perspectives through which we view the memories of our lives.

My concerns with portraying a duality within an object or objects are sourced from my own experiences and also inspired by my interests in the role intimacy plays in our lives. I define intimacy as the subtle actions that take place between bodies and objects, potent moments that embody emotions or feelings. As our daily integration with the digital world increases with exponential speed, I fear we are losing these opportunities for reflection. Our intimate moments and interactions are often fleeting, existing in moments diffused by technological distractions. This rapid change motivates me to depict fixed moments in time that allow for a slowness—a quiet space that asks one to pay attention.

My ceramic sculptures appear soft and malleable; yet they are hardened and permanent objects in space. This perceived softness relates to the flesh of the body and to domestic materials as a means of connecting with our innate humanness. Through various ambivalent postures and subtle comparisons, the forms evoke a curiosity, a desire to empathize with their conflicting state.

Bio

 

Sara Allen Prigodich received her BFA in Ceramics from the Hartford Art School at the University of Hartford and her MFA in ceramics from the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth. Her professional experience includes positions such as studio assistant, ceramics department technician, resident artist as well as instructor. She has exhibited her work nationally in both juried and invitational exhibitions and has work in both private and public collections. Currently, Sara spends her time working in her studio and teaching art in Oswego New York.

    About the Juror, Ellen Driscoll

Ellen Driscoll’s work encompasses sculpture, drawing, and public art installation. Recent large scale installations include “CartOURgraphy” for Middle College High School and the International High School in Queens, "Night to Day, Here and Away" for the Sarasota National Cemetery, “Distant Mirrors” for the Providence River, “FastForwardFossil #2” at Smack Mellon in Brooklyn, and “Revenant” and “Phantom Limb” for Nippon Ginko, Hiroshima, Japan. Earlier works include “The Loophole of Retreat” at the Whitney Museum at Phillip Morris, “As Above, So Below” for Grand Central Terminal (a suite of 20 mosaic and glass images for the tunnels at 45th, 47th, and 48th Streets), “Catching the Drift”, a restroom for the Smith College Museum of Art, and “Wingspun” for the International Arrivals corridor at Raleigh Durham airport. Ms. Driscoll has been awarded fellowships from the Guggenheim Foundation, the National Endowment for the Arts, the Bunting Institute at Harvard University, the New York Foundation for the Arts, the Massachusetts Council on the Arts, the LEF Foundation, the Rhode Island Foundation, Anonymous Was a Woman, a 2014 Fine Arts Award from the American Academy of Arts and Letters, and a 2015 Siena Arts Institute Fellowship.  Her work is included in major public and private collections including the Metropolitan Museum of Art, and the Whitney Museum of Art.  She is Program Director of Studio Arts and Visiting Professor of Sculpture at Bard College. http://www.ellendriscoll.net/
