"Woodcuts:" Roger Buck at the Montross-1934
Roger Buck (1901-1970) was a prolific European artist who was well-versed in the visual arts. But his true love was wood engraving and print making. He came to the United States in 1929 after establishing himself widely throughout Europe. His first gallery show in New York was at the legendary Montross Gallery, in March of 1934.
The extensive Roger Buck collection has not been seen by the general public in over 60 years! It is maintained and curated by Mr. Buck's grandson Brian Corbley and his wife Lyna. They are presenting, for the first time, a retrospective of the Montross Gallery show entitled "Woodcuts."
This special exhibit in the Solo Gallery at the Barrett Art Center is courtesy of the Corbleys, who are residents of Poughkeepsie, in honor of the 75th Anniversary of the founding of the DCAA. Roger Buck was a contemporary of DCAA founder Thomas Barrett and both shared a love of printmaking inspired by the social life of, and social commentary on, the Roaring Twenties, Prohibition and the Great Depression.
Barrett Art Center thanks Brian and Lyna for their efforts to mount this special exhibit.
