Pushing Paper: A National Juried Exhibition

Pushing Paper: Realizing the Potential of Paper seeks work that explores and manipulates the materiality of paper, as well as works on paper, including watercolor, oil, photography, prints, digital work, and drawings.   Artists are invited to provide a juxtaposition of traditional styles and cutting-edge practices. In addition to 2-D works in all media, sculpture, and installation are all encouraged.
The galleries in Barrett Art Center’s 1840s Greek Revival townhouse create a visually-compelling setting for both traditional and contemporary works. Our national exhibitions are visited by art enthusiasts and collectors from the Hudson Valley and surrounding areas, including New York City, New Jersey, Pennsylvania and the New England states.

Submitting Entries:
BAC Members: $30 for the first three images, $5 for each additional image.
Non-members: $40 for the first three images, $5 for each additional image.

 Juror: Paul Wong, Master Papermaker, Dieu Donné (”Papermill”, Brooklyn Navy Yard)
Paul Wong is Artistic Director (retired 2017) of Dieu Donné and a master papermaker/artist who has collaborated with artists such as Chuck Close, Richard Tuttle, Jim Hodges, Ursula Von Rydingsvard, Louise Bourgeois, among many other major artists producing groundbreaking work in the creative papermaking medium for over 38 years. He has been awarded grants from the NEA, NYFA and the Joan Mitchell Foundation. Wong has widely exhibited his work in paper, books, and installations since 1975 at museums and galleries including Neuberger Museum, Plains Museum, Columbia College Center for Book and Paper Arts, and Dieu Donné. He has conducted papermaking lectures and workshops including: NY Library, Haystack, Penland, Banff, Oxbow, PBI, UArts-Philadelphia, UA-Tuscaloosa, Columbia College-Chicago, Morgan Conservatory-Cleveland

 Promotion for Selected Artists
Marketing strategies employed for exhibitions include: Press releases submitted to more than 80 print and electronic media outlet in the Hudson Valley with consistent local newspaper coverage; Online: weekly DCAA newsletter; website (www.barrettartcenter.org); Facebook; Instagram; Twitter. The DCAA e-newsletter has over 2,600 subscribers. Information emphasizes “action links” to drive traffic to the DCAA website and connect readers to relevant artist contact information on online galleries for each exhibition, all of which are archived on the site for viewing after the show. The website attracts over 2,200 unique visitors on average each month.
