Barrett Artist in Residence (BAiR) - Benjamin Arnold
Benjamin Arnold is a British artist, living & working in the Hudson Valley, New York BA (Hons), Camberwell College of Arts, University of the Arts London, 2002 - 2005
Born in 1983 in the city of Newcastle upon-Tyne in the North-East of England, an only-child, he spent much of his childhood moving with his parents from one place to another; from Seoul, South Korea, at the age of 2, to Singapore, Norway, and back to England. During this time drawing increasingly became a means of entertaining himself, and a love of comic books developed into a passion for the visual arts.
Benjamin received his BA (Hons) degree from Camberwell College of Arts, University of the Arts London - one of Britain’s leading art schools. There he studied Drawing "as visual thinking", developing an interest in figurative, realist painting amidst a group of fellow artists pursuing eclectic, mostly conceptual contemporary practices (video, performance art, sculptural-installation). Despite his profound interest in the history of oil painting and his study of the Old Masters in books and the museums of London - very much at odds with the prevailing postmodern pedagogy of the British art school in the early 21st Century - this experience has never left him, and he credits the exposure to a variety of different disciplines as a significant part of his artistic development.
In late 2011 Benjamin moved to Florence, Italy to dedicate time to focusing on improving his drawing & painting abilities more formally. In 2013 he was awarded a prestigious Queen Elizabeth Scholarship Trust (QEST) scholarship, granted on behalf of the Royal Warrant Holders Association, to study at the Florence Academy of Art. In October 2015 Benjamin moved to the USA. He is currently the artist in residence at the Barrett Art Center, Poughkeepsie, NY.
