From the Executive Director - Turning Over New Leaves in 2017

Contrary to what the more botanically-minded might be inclined to think, the phrase "turning over a leaf" has little to do with trees or vegetation. Dating back to the 1600s, the expression actually refers to turning a page – once commonly called a “leaf” – to reveal a new, clean page.  I’ve invoked the helpful idiom in the title of this, the first item in the new blog of musings on art, artists, exhibitions, classes, workshops, and more from Barrett Art Center, Poughkeepsie, NY.  We’ll be using the blog to keep you up-to-date on all new programs, happenings and personalities that promise to make 2017 another banner year at Barrett. We hope you will find inspiration to turn over a new leaf to energize your own creative endeavors in the coming year.

We greeted the new year here at 55 Noxon Street with a new coat of paint in the galleries, an update made possible through funding from the Dyson Foundation. Special appreciation goes out to Jode Millman for her continuing support of our stewardship of Barrett’s historic building. Likewise, we are grateful to Herzog’s Home Centers. Doug Mosley from the Herzog’s location in Poughkeepsie whipped up a batch of our special Benjamin Moore “Barrett Gold” color for our hallways and generously provided additional paint for the galleries.

We’ve spent the beginning of January receiving 63 photographs selected from over 800 national submissions for Photowork 2017, and on Monday, January 9, accepted submissions for the first of three Juried Members’ Shows planned for 2017.

All are invited to enjoy these two first-rate exhibitions (and take a look at the crisp new interior paint) at the opening reception on Saturday, January 21 from 3:00 to 6:00 p.m. to help us celebrate the 30th Anniversary of Photowork and launch the new season of Juried Members’ Shows on view in the Crenson Gallery.

We will keep you updated on happenings and events at Barrett throughout 2017 to inspire you in your own creative endeavors and encourage you to get involved in all the goings on in 2017.
