Spending the Light: Basics with Your Camera

Saturday, February 23, 10am-2pm OR Monday, March 4, 9:30am-1:30pm

Understanding and managing light is fundamental to successful photography. Learn how to “spend the light” effectively to convey ideas that impress you. This is a basic class with straightforward and fun explanations and examples of the most important controls on your camera. Photography is a visual and technical language and this is a great beginner or great refresher class.
Focal length, depth of field, shutter speed, ISO, white balance, resolution will be discussed and put into play during the workshop. Lots of examples and hands-on!

 Requirements: Participants need a camera (other than a phone camera), camera manual, memory card, charged batteries.

Table Top Photography: The Basics

Friday, March 1, 2-5pm

Practice photographing still lives and small artworks with studio continuous lights. Learn how to use the basic settings on your camera and Barrett Art Center lights from a professional photographer. This is an excellent workshop for artists who wish to photograph their own small 3D artworks for submission, websites and print. It will cover basic steps, including white balance, camera and light positioning, focal length and exposure settings. Upon successful completion of the workshop you can rent and use the lights on your own at Barrett Art Center.

Requirements: Digital camera with manual settings, tripod, camera manual (optional, but recommended) and permission of instructor. 

Each participant can bring 1 piece or group of pieces no more 18 inches in any direction.

Adobe Lightroom: Basics

Saturday, March 2, 1-5 pm

Now you have the picture (or all few thousand of them), what next? Learn the basics -- how to both organize and develop images in Adobe Lightroom, a relatively inexpensive and powerful database and editing software program. This is a program that can interface with Adobe Photoshop and Adobe Photoshop Elements. It organizes, sorts, develops and prints. The interface can be a little daunting at first, but the payoff is large. Importing and organizing, basic editing and printing will be covered. Basic computer experience necessary. 
Requirements: Laptop* with Adobe Lightroom installed (demo version is fine.)

Adobe Lightroom: Beyond the Basics

So you have done some work with Adobe Lightroom. Maybe you have some Photoshop experience too, but you want to get specific questions answered as well as up your game overall. This workshop will delve into the “Develop Module”, “Printing Module” and Export techniques and more. It is a small workshop, with plenty of time for specific questions and individual attention.
Requirements: Laptop with Adobe Lightroom installed (demo version is fine.)

About Lori Adams

 Lori Adams is a professional photographer and experienced teacher. She began teaching workshops at Barrett Art Center in the early 2000’s and has taught hundreds of students at all levels through grade school and college and beyond through Barrett, Dutchess Community College, Garrison Art Center and more.

In and out of her studio, she has photographed fine silver, artwork of all kinds, people of all ages, products large and small, events and much more. Her fine art work includes macro botanical photographic studies and documentation of industrial and rural architecture.

Photography Walking Tour

(Rain Date: March 23rd) 

 Join Barrett Art Center as we explore some of Poughkeepsie's notable locations through the lens of our cameras during this walking tour. Lead by Barrett Board Member and Artist Nikki Hung, we will start the tour at Barrett Art Center's location on Noxon Street and work our way around many locations in the city of Poughkeepsie and discuss their significance and rich history.  

 Upon the group's return to BAC there will be refreshments and drinks served. All skill levels of photography are welcome! Bring your own camera and equipment (or you can use your phone).  $10 Suggested Donation

Advanced Photography Seminar

with Dan McCormack and Mike Sibilia

This course is offered on Thursdays, 6:00 pm
Sessions are scheduled 4-6 weeks apart. Please call or email for details.

Get meaningful and regular feedback on photo projects. Bring work in progress - whether it's two prints or twenty - to each session. The group considers and responds to each photographer's progress. The discussions provide invaluable insight as each body of work develops.

New students may enroll with the moderators' approval. 

Tuition:  $160/4 sessions.

DAN McCORMACK earned an MFA in photography from the School of the Art Institute, Chicago. He won the Figurative Photography 2009 grant from the Ultimate Eye Foundation, was featured at the Peninsula Art Museum in California and has exhibited internationally.
