In an age of images, our visual sense exists in a constant flood stage. Pictures are everywhere but only the rarest rise above to convey real emotions or ideas beyond the superficial.
In navigating the work submitted I was drawn to imagery that rejected obvious visual language to depict singularity.
I found a diverse group of artists and approaches utilizing the unique strengths of the photographic medium: a single image’s ability to transmit emotional resonance through the subtlest of gestures. Abstract landscapes that hint at social commentary and in their mystery, suggest a multitude of narrative possibilities. Powerful portraiture that speaks in a voice that is delicate and direct. I sought to select a body of work that creates, connected by invisible and intangible narrative threads, a vision of the wonder and mystery of our world.
The artists represented depict that world in surprising and delightful ways. Ray Koh’s aerial drone imagery of the detritus of modern life is sculptural and beautiful in the abstract and terrifying in the literal. Brian Johnson’s studies of gender convey an off-kilter power with an arresting and delicate ambiguity. Darcy Dangremond’s timeless depiction of weightless joy is uplifting and pure.
